Nordenskiold
River Breakup
Type of
advisory:
Ice
Advisory
Status
of advisory:
Ended
Date
and time of advisory : 5/6/26, 1:45 PM
Current
conditions
The
majority of the ice in the Nordenskiold has now cleared and water levels are
currently near bankful due to recent warm weather and resultant rapid snowmelt.
Some ice may still be causing backwater and elevating levels further.
Weather
forecast
In
Carmacks, temperatures are forecast to be close to seasonal for the next few
days; highs in the low to mid-teens and lows just above freezing overnight. A
chance of showers today and sunny tomorrow.
Water
level forecast
With
the cooler weather, the rate of rise is expected to moderate today but still
increase and may exceed bankful overnight. Low lying areas may already be
inundated. The amount of potential rise today in uncertain but it expected to
be less than yesterday due to the lower overnight temperatures which has
allowed levels to stabilize this morning.
Flood
and travel advice
Stay
clear of the fast-flowing rivers and potentially unstable riverbanks during the
high-streamflow period. Flood-prone property owners should have a flood plan in
place in the event of a flood. See www.PreparedYukon.ca for more information
about preparing for floods. We will continue to monitor conditions and will
provide updates as conditions change.
