We've completed the final draft of our Integrated Community Sustainability Plan (ICSP). For a look at Carmacks's future, click here.

A message from the Mayor:

Carmacks is a picturesque community located at the confluence of the Nordenskiold and Yukon Rivers. Located approximately 2 hours north of Whitehorse by highway, it is know as the "Hub of the Yukon", as once you have arrived here, you can easily travel by road to almost any destination in the Yukon.

I encourage you to stop and spend an enjoyable day strolling down our scenic boardwalk, which follows the path of the Yukon River. There are signs along the path which tell some of the local history of Carmacks. Once completed, please stop in at either the Visitor Information Center located at the east end of the boardwalk (in the summer months), or the Village of Carmacks Municipal Office to obtain your certificate of achievement for completing the journey. I also suggest a visit to the Tage Cho Judan Interpretive Center which allows you a tiny glimpse into the local cultural history.

For the more adventurous type, Carmacks offers a variety of trails that most rock hounds would enjoy as well as a vast area for exploring either by foot, bike, boat (this includes fishing), ATV or in the winter months, by snow machine.

Whether you are travelling by land or water, Carmacks is a community which offers you full service amenities as well as local shopping.

Either one of our Information Centers or our friendly municipal staff would be more than willing to assist you with any further information that would make your visit more enjoyable.

Mayor Elaine Wyatt

Our attractions include great fishing, several agate trails leading to gemstones and geodes, a 1.5 kilometer boardwalk, and a number of historic artifacts. We’re busy upgrading our soon-to-be nine hole golf course.

The water supply is from private wells, but the Village is pursuing, with Government of Yukon, funding for a community system to provide and distribute potable water. There is some water delivery.

Waste Management

Wastewater is processed and non-toxic effluent discharged to the Yukon River. A new wastewater treatment plant has been tendered with construction startup hoped for by late 2006.

The village does not provide garbage pickup, although both the first nation and Yukon Housing collect from their residents. Recycling is encouraged and the depot is open one afternoon per week for return of deposit items.

The municipality operates a landfill site at the south entrance to town, compacting and covering household solid wastes. The landfill is open from 8:00am to 7:00pm Monday, Wednesday, Friday and Saturday.

Transportation

Air Service

An airport and helicopter base within village boundaries provide fire-fighting capability and landing for private aircraft.

The Whitehorse Regional Airport is 175 km south. Yukon’s own Air North provides scheduled flights to Edmonton, Calgary and Vancouver as well as to Dawson City and Old Crow. Air Canada’s regional service has flights to Vancouver. Several smaller carriers offer destinations within Yukon.

Rail Service

Discussions are continuing to develop a railroad through the Yukon for resource exploration and eventual construction of an oil pipeline to Alaska. Depending on the route, Carmacks may benefit.

Highways

The North Klondike Highway connects Carmacks with Dawson City, Pelly Crossing, Stewart Crossing, Mayo and the Silver Trail to the north, and Whitehorse to the south. The Robert Campbell Highway intersects with the North Klondike in Carmacks, and leads to Faro, Ross River, the Northwest Territories and Watson Lake.

Trucking Firms - Carmacks is serviced from Whitehorse.

Recreation

The Carmacks Recreation Centre is at the east end of River Drive between the nursing station and visitor centre, and is a community focal point for youth. There is a youth drop-in daily with computer access, video games, table games and other activities, often funded by Yukon grant programs. The gymnasium is host to adult floor hockey and other sports, and there is an attached curling rink and a covered outdoor skating rink. The newest addition to the Rec Centre is a full set of fitness equipment, including weights and treadmills. The Sweetheart Bonspiel is held around Valentine’s Day and Winterlude is in early March.

Summer sees the opening of the swimming pool, usually from the Victoria Day weekend in May to the last week of August. A training site for the Carmacks Kings swim club, the pool also offers family and adult lessons and public swims.

Our natural outdoors offers snowmobiling and all terrain vehicle adventures, fishing and some spectacular hiking. In summer, Coal Mine Lake is a short hike from town and well worth the effort. The ridge walk trail hosts an inter-school competition each spring, and Carmacks is a huge contributor, per capita, to the Terry Fox Run each year.
